Import two different paper textures, one for the printed, compressed area, and another for the blank background. Lay out your artwork in Illustrator, then bring it into Photoshop and merge the design into one layer.ģ. One can also simply lighten the darkest colors up a bit, replacing blacks with dark grays, for instance.Ģ. For instance, I brought my blacks down to 80 or 90 percent opacity. TIP: To help the textures show through dark colors, make those colors slightly transparent. For shading, I used a ‘halftone pattern swatch’ (Image ID: 41049799) by williammpark. In this case, I extracted the palm trees and the wavy lines delineating the clouds. One great thing about these vector files is that they are relatively easy to slice and dice and adapt to your overall design’s needs as I have done with ‘Tropical coast’ (Image ID: 79855960) by song_mi. ![]() I combined all these in an Illustrator file, and then created a background using ‘seamless wave illustration’ (Image ID: 57481165) and ‘ocean wave seamless’(Image ID: 86052196) by paul_june. So letterpress tends to rely on line art, bold graphic elements, and limited color palettes. Bear in mind that during real-world letterpress printing, each color is applied separately, using a different plate, requiring the machine to be reset, making complex, multicolored designs hard to pull off. This tutorial requires both Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and you should have a mid- to advanced-level understanding of both programs to follow these steps.ġ. To demonstrate the process, we will make a simple, summer-themed postcard. Of course, Photoshop won’t actually crimp your paper, so true letterpress printing can only be achieved on a real printing press, but one advantage of faking it in Photoshop is you’re less likely to lose a finger. Printers attempted to avoid such errors by increasing the force of their machines so much so that the plates would actually compress and flatten the paper at the point of contact, creating the distinctive indentation and contouring for which letterpress is known today. One of the problems with the process stemmed from the fact that, for centuries, both printing plates and paper were handmade, and therefore not perfectly flat, resulting in knocked out areas where ink failed to deposit on the paper. In the broadest sense of the term, letterpress refers to the technique invented by Johannes Gutenburg whereby a raised surface is inked and pressed onto paper (relief printing). LETTERPRESS PRINTING shutterstock_7963231 Letterpress printing is one of the easiest printing techniques to simulate, and requires little more than making simple selections, deleting parts of images, and applying the most basic layer effects–which makes it perfect for a Summer side-project. The artifacts and imperfections associated with older, traditional techniques can evoke strong feelings of nostalgia in the viewer and lend a vintage feel to even the simplest of designs. Don’t be afraid to explicitly mimic the look and feel of low-tech printing methods. Taking a direct cue from the graphic arts of yesteryear can often work wonders. One of the perennial challenges for designers in the computer age is creating images that seem organic, that appear handmade, and feel analog even though they were digitally generated. ![]() Make your summer BBQ or pool party invite super-cool and give it a lo-fi twist with a vintage letterpress effect. ![]()

Shapes of atomic orbitals5/18/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In the case of simple hybridization, this approximation is based on atomic orbitals, similar to those obtained for the hydrogen atom, the only neutral atom for which the Schrödinger equation can be solved exactly. Orbitals are a model representation of the behavior of electrons within molecules. The amount of p character or s character, which is decided mainly by orbital hybridisation, can be used to reliably predict molecular properties such as acidity or basicity. Hybridisation theory explains bonding in alkenes and methane. For drawing reaction mechanisms sometimes a classical bonding picture is needed with two atoms sharing two electrons. Hybridisation theory is an integral part of organic chemistry, one of the most compelling examples being Baldwin's rules. It gives a simple orbital picture equivalent to Lewis structures. This concept was developed for such simple chemical systems, but the approach was later applied more widely, and today it is considered an effective heuristic for rationalizing the structures of organic compounds. Each hybrid is denoted sp 3 to indicate its composition, and is directed along one of the four C-H bonds. Pauling supposed that in the presence of four hydrogen atoms, the s and p orbitals form four equivalent combinations which he called hybrid orbitals. The angle between any two bonds is the tetrahedral bond angle of 109☂8' (around 109.5°). In reality, methane has four C-H bonds of equivalent strength. Pauling pointed out that a carbon atom forms four bonds by using one s and three p orbitals, so that "it might be inferred" that a carbon atom would form three bonds at right angles (using p orbitals) and a fourth weaker bond using the s orbital in some arbitrary direction. History and uses Ĭhemist Linus Pauling first developed the hybridisation theory in 1931 to explain the structure of simple molecules such as methane (CH 4) using atomic orbitals. Usually hybrid orbitals are formed by mixing atomic orbitals of comparable energies. Hybrid orbitals are useful in the explanation of molecular geometry and atomic bonding properties and are symmetrically disposed in space. For example, in a carbon atom which forms four single bonds the valence-shell s orbital combines with three valence-shell p orbitals to form four equivalent sp 3 mixtures in a tetrahedral arrangement around the carbon to bond to four different atoms. In chemistry, orbital hybridisation (or hybridization) is the concept of mixing atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals (with different energies, shapes, etc., than the component atomic orbitals) suitable for the pairing of electrons to form chemical bonds in valence bond theory. Are black or pinto beans healthier5/17/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Quercetin is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps reduce the risk of plaquing of the arteries - it also protects against damage caused by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. “They contain quercetin and saponins, which help protect the heart. Good stuff! Now snag some Beano, and come along.ġ) Black Beans : “The number one choice for cardiovascular health is black beans,” Friedman says. These make beans more digestible and won’t cause the wallpaper in the dining room to curl up.” You can also combat getting gas from eating beans by adding digestive spices, like ginger, turmeric, fennel or asafetida. When consumed, this enzyme breaks down the oligosaccharides before they reach the intestines, thereby preventing the production of gas. It contains the enzyme α-galactosidase, derived from the fungus Aspergillus niger. “If you want to avoid flatulence from beans,” Friedman continues, “the commercial product Beano is a great option. After the bacteria digest the oligosaccharides, several types of gases are produced, including some odorless ones, such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and the foul-smelling, eye-watering gas methane.” “When beans get to the colon, the gut bacteria begins to ferment these sugars, which produces gas. ![]() “ Beans contain a sugar called an oligosaccharide, and the human body doesn’t produce the enzyme to fully break it down,” he explains. The thing is, there are countless kinds of beans and legumes, some of which are much healthier than others. So for anyone concerned about protein content, beans and legumes (pulses, as they’re called in other countries) are great.” “One hundred grams of beans have around 21 grams of protein (some have more, some have slightly less), whereas 100 grams of chicken has 30 grams. “These, of course, are all-natural, full of healthy protein and fiber and contain no added salt,” Hunnes explained, adding that beans and legumes also have a super low carbon footprint.
